As warm weather approaches, it’s the perfect time to make sure your cooling system is ready to perform. Whether you have a central AC system or a ductless mini split, here are four simple checks you can do yourself to improve efficiency, prevent issues, and keep your home comfortable.
Thermostat or Remote Control
Start with your thermostat (or remote if you have a mini split):
- Set it to Cool: Drop the temperature a few degrees below your current room temperature to activate the system.
- Give it a Minute: It may take a couple of minutes for your system to communicate with the outdoor unit and kick on.
- Change the Batteries: If your thermostat or remote runs on batteries, replace them with a fresh set at the beginning of each cooling season to avoid communication issues.
Outdoor Condensing Unit
Your outdoor unit plays a big role in how efficiently your system runs:
- Clear the Area: Make sure there’s at least two feet of space on all sides and above the unit. Remove any debris, leaves, weeds, or overgrown bushes.
- Rinse the Coils: Use a garden hose to gently spray off any dirt, pollen, or dust that’s built up on the coils. Clean coils help your system breathe better and cool more efficiently.
- Visual Check: Make sure the fan blades and top of the unit are clean and spin freely.
Air Handler (or Furnace Cabinet)
For homes with central air systems, the air handler is key to proper airflow:
- Locate the Filter: It’s usually found inside the air handler or furnace cabinet.
- Check and Replace the Filter: If it’s dirty, replace it (if disposable) or clean it (if reusable). A clean filter improves airflow, helps your system cool more efficiently, and keeps the air in your home cleaner.
Ductless Mini Split Maintenance
If you have a mini split (also called a ductless AC or heat pump system), do this:
- Turn Off the Power: Before opening the unit, shut it off completely.
- Open the Cover: Carefully open the top panel to access the washable filters.
- Clean the Filters: Remove them and rinse under water (you can use mild soap and a sponge if needed). Shake off excess water and let them dry before reinstalling.
- Slide Them Back In: Once dry, slide the filters back into place and close the cover securely.
- Restart the System: Power the unit back on and confirm that it’s blowing properly.
